Security Tips

  • Do not leave valuables in your car. Regardless of their value, a passing thief may be tempted to break in the car. This usually results in costly repair to the car and replacement of expensive car windows.

  • Park in well lighted areas. Consider installing motion detectors or lights with photo electric cells that are on from dusk to dawn.

  • Notify your block captain and the security coordinator if you are going to be out of town. Paid neighborhood association members can request house checks by the off duty DeKalb County Police officers who work for our neighborhood.

  • If you see any unknown persons driving or walking through the neighborhood acting suspiciously, call 911 and report a "suspicious person or suspicious vehicle. Notify the security coordinator immediately as well.

  • Leave lights on timers when you are not at home. Vary the pattern in which they come on. The same pattern every night may signal to a thief that you are gone.

  • There is a 12 PM midnight to 6 am curfew for teenagers under the age of 16. Call 911 if you see anyone of these ages out during these times.

Things to Remember

  • Door-to-door solicitations MUST have a current, valid permit from the DeKalb County Police Department. Call the police if people are soliciting without a permit. Often, criminals will "case" a neighborhood by going door to door asking for work, etc.

  • You could be taking unnecessary risks to use unknown individuals who solicit you door-to-door for work.

  • Report any break-ins to the police. They need to have a comprehensive picture of activity around our neighborhood. Report this to your block captain and the security coordinator as well.

  • Call 911 if you see a stranger hanging around. Get tag numbers of any suspicious cars. Let the police check out a questionable situation. Don't endanger yourself in the situation.

  • Do not hesitate to call 911 to report any suspicious or unusual activity. Watch out for each other and get to know your neighbors.

  • Do provide a secondary barrier for security, store regularly used valuables such as cameras, jewelry, guns, silverware, valuable coins or other collectibles in a closet secured by a deadbolt lock with pinned hinges.

  • Don't admit strangers to use your telephone. Offer to make the call for them or call the police if you are uncomfortable with the person. Do not let them in your house and it is best to NOT open your door to strangers.

  • Do not answer personal questions over the phone. Such questions such as your hours of employment, number and sex of persons living in your home, or the number of cars you own.
