Spring 2006

Spring Planting At Forrest Hills Elementary!

With help from Lance Muller, neighbor and landscape architect, Forrest Hills Elementary Community Coalition (FHECC) is spring planting our neighborhood school's planned beds! On Saturday March 4 th from 9:00am to 12 noon (rain date: Saturday, March 11) we will plant flowers and spread mulch. Please join us - please wear work gloves and bring shovels, hand spades, rakes and wheelbarrows. Invite friends and local civic groups to help.

Donate Extra Plants!

Please consider donating perennials you are thinning or removing. To keep costs low, we are looking for donated plants or seeds - all types are welcome, but drought tolerant or hearty varieties are preferred: purple cone flower, black eyed susan, cannas, daisies, daylillies, roses, yarrow, flowering shrubs, bulbs and decorative herbs. Feel free to bring your transplants from 8:30-9:30am on the 11th (give a little notice so we can plan for placement).

Summer 2006

Local Student Exchange Village At Forrest Hills Elementary June 2006

This June, FHECC will sponsor a Local Village by the Metro Atlanta Chapter of Children's International Summer Villages (CISV). Forrest Hills Elementary will open its doors to 48 ten and eleven year old delegates from area elementary schools (Oak Grove, Friends, ICS, Forrest Hills and Avondale). All projects, lessons and workshops focus on multi-cultural understanding, mutual respect and incorporate CISV's philosophy of “peace through understanding”. FHECC supports this project so we can build partnerships and relationships among these schools and bring our communities together. Volunteers are needed for meal preparation, music, performing arts, fitness/recreation, arts/crafts, language instruction, chaperoning, etc. To volunteer email drpuckett@earthlink.net . For more information about CISV, please visit www.atlanta.cisvusa.org

Other Announcements

Second Anniversary: Since we founded FHECC two years ago we have accomplished so much with only a few active members. The time has come for more parents with children under 4 (babies and toddlers too) to get involved. Every "successful" intown school has a group of hardworking and dedicated parents. Ask anyone in education, “what makes a great school?" You will hear "active and supportive parents". Then ask yourself, “When did that begin…and with whom?”

Community support is essential to the success of any public school and the quality of education available to our children. Even if you are not a parent of a young child you may have concerns about how the performance of our elementary school impacts our neighborhood. Influences can be neighbor retention and attraction, quality of programs available to children attending and the stability of home values.

Please help us move forward with the plans and work of the coalition. Our steering committee meets only once a month (2nd Tuesday) from 7:30-9:00pm . More participation from the community will make a difference! For more information : please contact Denise Reidy-Puckett at 404-593-6525 (cell) or email to drpuckett@earthlink.net.
